Planning A Litter

A lot of thought and work goes into a litter. First you need to start with two great dogs that complement one another. The whole goal is to improve on the parents. Pedigrees play a very important role as researching the ancestors helps to see what a possible litter could turn out to be.

The two dogs involved need to be cleared by the vet prior to breeding. Both need to be of sufficient maturity and in excellent health. Once pregnant, an ultrasound around 30 days or an X-Ray just prior to whelping is carried out. Proper nutrition, exercise/rest and a constant environment all play into a healthy pregnancy.

Show breeders spend many thousands of dollars to have their dogs compete in events. Hotels, gas, entry fees, etc. add up quickly.

The end result of all this planning and expense is a healthy litter that exudes the qualities and characteristics of well bred dogs.

Chihuahua litters are typically 1-3 puppies. It is not unusual to have a litter of only one puppy, and costly c-sections are frequent. Registration fees with the CKC, microchips, dewclaw removal, innoculations, and a health guarantee are all part of continuing on with the litter, and 8 - 10 weeks with their mom is a must.

Pups are also peepad trained before they leave.

Due to the many months that are spent in planning, whelping and raising a litter, all puppies are sold on a strict spay/neuter contract unless arrangements have been made PRIOR to purchase. I reserve the right to decide who will adopt a pup from me.
